The UGA Tour History
|
The UGA Tour was founded in 2001 by Tom Millican. Millican did not start playing golf till 1993. During his early years of learning the game he started playing in amateur developmental tours around the Charlotte area. Just as he would get into one tour it would fold and he would have to find another.
The traveling to the Charlotte area and the folding of the tours forced him to think about his competitive golf in a different way. Why not start his own tour he thought. There were more than enough golf courses and golfers in the Unifour area to provide both event sights and players. With the knowledge he gained from playing in the other tours on how to promote and run tournaments he began the UGA Tour.
The first season of the UGA Tour began in 2001 with eight players and a schedule of every other week play. The UGA Tour struggled for the first two years mainly due to low attendance. In January 2003 Millican began his Unifour Golf Magazine and this was the catalyst to jump start the struggling tour.
The Unifour Golf Magazine began to advertise and report on the UGA Tour. This publicity began to develop interest in the tour and the tour membership began to grow. In 2003 there were 21 events on the schedule and the number of players began to total in the double digits.
By 2004 the tour membership had grown to 46 and the number of events grew to 26. Over the 2005 and 2006 season the schedule and number of members steadily grew. In 2005 the tour began to let players from outside the Unifour area play in its events. This began to bring in players from all over Western North Carolina.
Along with players from outside of the Unifour area the UGA Tour began to schedule play outside of the area as well. The UGA Tour began to travel to the Winston Salem area in 2005. By the end of 2006 The UGA posted scores for 59 players.
The mission of the UGA Tour is to provide to golfers of all levels the opportunity to develop their playing skills in an environment that is conducive to their development through competition, education and instruction.
The 2007 season was the best ever in numbers, both events and players. With seven years in knowledge and experience The UGA Tour has a solid foundation that will propel it into the stratosphere.
The UGA Tour is a recognized golf club of the CGA and was written about in the CGAs monthly magazine during the 2007 season. With this recognition by the CGA the UGA Tour is well on its way to becoming the most respected amateur developmental tour in Western North Carolina.

The UGA General Information
|
The Unifour Golf Association "UGA" is an amateur golf association in North Carolina based in the Unifour and surrounding areas. The UGA has a tour schedule consisting of a series of stroke play golf tournaments held at various courses playing under the USGA rules of golf. The UGA has been exclusively a scratch or (gross score winner) golf league from its inception with no formal USGA handicapping used to equalize the playing field other than the use of differing tee boxes for different flights. However, beginning in 2008 the UGA tournament schedule will have both a scratch (Gross) and a handicap (Net) winner for each tournament and will utilize the formal USGA handicapping system to determine the net winner.
If you do not have a handicap or belong to a club, joining the UGA and playing in its tournaments will help you to establish an official USGA Handicap. That handicap can get you into CGA (Carolinas Golf Association) tournaments and if you are good enough you can possibly qualify to compete in even bigger amateur tournaments such as the US Amateur, US Mid Am., US Amateur Public Links, and others, for a few examples.
